Coeliac disease

Food related issues affecting the gastrointestinal tract are common and can cause significant symptoms such as pain, bloating, and altered bowel habit, as well as adversely threatening a person’s health and quality of life.

There are a variety of causes of food-related issues, including immune illnesses such as coeliac disease and eosinophilic oesophagitis, irritable bowel syndrome, intolerance to carbohydrates (FODMAPs), food allergies and non-allergic food sensitivities. Establishing the cause and specific triggers is crucial to guide appropriate medical care and management.

For some illnesses, such as coeliac disease, a diagnosis carries important implications for a person and their families health and their long-term medical care. We will undertake a thorough assessment including a comprehensive history, take into account all previous tests and treatments attempted, and establish a clear investigation and multi- disciplinary management plan moving forward.

Tests may involve blood and faecal tests, gastroscopy, colonoscopy or capsule endoscopy, imaging investigations or through colleagues, specific allergy assessments. We work closely with specialist dietitians, mind-gut specialists, gut physiotherapists and Clinical Immunology and Allergy specialists to develop a plan that will best address your symptoms and optimise your long-term health.
