Gastroenterologists provide proficient, specialist diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) system; this comprises the small or large (colon) intestines, liver, stomach, pancreas, oesophagus and the gallbladder.

4 in 10 people may have one digestive symptom at any one time and GI conditions can be common in the community. Some conditions are short and limited disease, although others can be lifelong and require careful treatment.

Common conditions gastroenterologists treat include irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, food intolerance, coeliac disease, H. pylori infection, fatty liver, colitis, colonic polyps and diverticulitis. Less common but important conditions include chronic liver or pancreatic disease and cancers that affect parts of the GI system.
